There Is Such A Thing As Too Good
Especially in art.
Dropped into MOCA today (thank you
again, Mr. Geffen) for a quick peek at a
show titled Electric Earth, a collection
of multi-media works by Doug Aitken,
homegrown boy of proud Redondo Beach.
Lots of astonishing visuals in a museum
that was entirely darkened. Lights.
Film. Amazing letter and number
sculptures, shining brightly.
One tri-screen piece, in its own room with
kindergarten komfort benches in a circle
around a trio of monitors, plays on a
continuous loop. Come on in anytime.
Yeah, yeah, I think, it’s another statement
on the stress of urban living here in L.A.,
with video of traffic, heavy traffic, huge
trucks and small tunnels, ho hum.
And then one of the screens breaks in with
an auctioneer, close up and tense, starting
slow, then speeding up up up beyond
the ear’s ability to discern, as the cars
crawl and the hurry hurry hurry of and
worry worry worry of where we live
notches up.
My heart rate was climbing, my shoulder
muscles were bunching — let me outta
here!
WTF is that?

When well done, wrenches a reaction
from the most jaded soul.
And loving it.
