A Sad Tale of the Under-Educated
We know it’s the dawning of the auto-pilot auto
and other techie marvels.
Lest we be too dismissive, let’s recognize that
not everything that’s old school is — well,
old and to be ignored.
A friend talks about his sixteen-year-old nephew
visiting.
The kid’s dream while in L.A.?
To drive his uncle’s Maserati convertible to the
beach in our winter sunshine.
No! Said adoring Unkie.
Kid: I’ve got my license!
Unkie: No!
Kid: (whimpering) I just want to make that
engine growl, feel it in the seat of my pants!
Unkie: No and no and no.
Kid: (not whimpering) I’m practically an
orphan. All my grand-parents are gone, and
mom is your only sister.
Unkie: You can sit in the driver’s seat and turn
on the engine. Rev the motor a few times if
you want.
Kid and Unkie repair to the garage. They ease
into the car like two characters from the cast
of COOL. Kid grabs the steering wheel as if it
were the holy grail. He sits for several seconds,
enjoying.
Unkie: The first thing you do is put in the clutch.
Kid: What’s that?
Quick chill on the thrill, stopped, finito, done
and gone, get out of the car.
WTF is that?
