Thanksgiving in L.A.
There is nothing — underscore nothing — like
the downtown wholesale flower mart in the
ayem on the day before Thansgiving.
Parking lots jammed by seven-thirty.
Hustling pedestrians not caring if they jostle
your bromeliads and orchids in passing.
Handlers at the counters yelling prices at the
cash register as they swirl stems into newspaper
cones and tie them with brown twine, all
quicker than the eye and ear can follow.
Customers three deep, elbows wide, trying to
protect their treasures from rudeness.
Apparently there are legions of us who would
rather spend tons of money on fetch-and-carry
flowers for the hostess than entertain the
thought of putting a turkey in our own oven.
