We Are A Higher Order
Remember laughing at the idea of the poor dumb
dog that salivated when Pavlov rang that bell?
Remember feeling superior to the wretched beasts
so out of control of their selves they were
turned into slavering caricatures?
We giggled at their anxiety, maybe, when they
waited for food no longer delivered.
Or how about the hilarious kitty in the window,
teeth chattering as it looks all drooley at a
bird outside the window, little heart beating
hysterically, eyes wide as panic?
Remember smiling at the hairball freak,
grateful to be a more evolved creature in
control, above the cesspool of conditioned
reflexes?
And then we
Wait. What’s that beeping?
Is my iPad in trouble?
No? Is my computer crashing?
Have you ever heard an alarm like that
before? No?
Forget the coffee, I’ll mop it up later.
Could it be the printer? No?
My phone?
